Staying the Course During Launch

Birthing a business is not for the faint of heart, right? There is a lot of heavy lifting involved and if you have any kind of life (alas, I do not – yet, that is) you are going to have to make some hard choices. After all, if you keep saying “no” to social invitations, people will eventually stop asking. True story. Still, having the courage to follow your dreams through to completion is what sets us apart. It begs the question, are you a multipreneur or a “wannapreneur”?

Part of ramping up means growing your list. This is mandatory, but it is not easy. In sales, the belief is that everyone knows at least 250 people. Ok, sure, maybe we do, but not all 250 will become your client if for no other reason than they are not your target market. You have to segment and be intentional about the people you invite along on your journey, and in doing so, you will have to talk to a large number of people within a relatively short time frame. You have to separate the wheat from the chaff which is not to say you have to be unkind to anyone you just have to recognize who is and who is not a potential customer. You will be describing your genius, if you will, to others and some will get it and some won’t.  Your “tribe” will self-select and raise their hand relatively quickly. Others will need more time, a longer courtship. The oft-repeated sales adage is that it takes five to seven “touches” before people are willing to buy. You will need people at all the different stages of the sales timeline to keep your coffers full so just be aware and try not to become frustrated or discouraged.

Now, as I said, some people raise their hand and ask to work with you. Others you will need to issue an invitation, be somewhat more persuasive, so you will need to master the Art of The Ask. Alas, that will have to be the topic of another book – as soon as I master it. In the meantime, do create some persuasive invitations, such as freemium downloads, mini-courses, or introductory workshops. You can also arrange to speak at others’ events; chat up your network about how you can provide value to their clients. Remember to be in teaching and inspiring mode, not selling mode. There are a time and a place. Do share your brilliance and let the light draw them into the fold.

While you must be out and about, live or virtually, it will feel like you have to keep your blinders on. This is so you do not keep changing the trajectory of what you are building. When you look around and see what others are doing you may start to wonder if your products or services are good enough, right? Maybe they seem to have a little more polish, brighter colors, more persuasive language – at least that’s what goes through your mind, so then doubt sets in, right? You will find you end up continuously tweaking, improving your offer, or improving yourself (more training, more certifications, more, more, more) till the time flies by and you are late to the party! Don’t do it. You are enough!

So yes, meet new people, attend events, mingle till you tingle and share your gifts to entice and intrigue. Your people – the ones you want to work with – will gravitate toward you, resonate with your message and give you the golden key:  they will opt in. Eureka moment!

So, don’t worry about what the other guru is doing, or the ten other gurus are doing. No one is doing it exactly like you. Chances are, no one is delivering the almighty “it” like you do. No one has had your exact experiences so no one else will glean the same expertise, the same lessons, the same value that you do. Remember, this is your own secret sauce, your “flava” so go on with your spicy self!
